Take Ownership, Be Sustainable, Be a Locadon!

When we read or hear of living sustainably it brings awareness to a broad spectrum of every day life choices we historically took for granted. As inhabitants of this planet we can no longer afford to do things on the cheap. At the current burn rate we in the United States consume earth’s resources at 4.5 times the carrying capacity of the earth. (Third highest of any other country.) This is completely unsustainable subsequently we as Americans need to be aware why buying locally sourced clothing, aka being a locadon, makes sense; practicing mindfulness.

The Carbon Footprint is the means by which scientists measure human activities that consume resources. In many ways, the consumption through the purchase of clothing can weigh heavily on this measure if you are not buying clothes that are sourced and manufactured here in the U.S.. Responsible American companies like Boathouse Sports have taken many calculated measures to reduce their carbon footprint. Boathouse Sports recycles, minimizes production waste and sources local fabrics to the largest extent possible.

Developing countries lack the policies and resources to implement environmentally friendly production practices. In the gripping 2015 documentary “The True Cost” they expose how that $5 spent on a t-shirt does NOT account for the extremely low wages, hazardous working conditions, copious amounts of water pollution generated, unregulated herbicide & pesticide overuse, and greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) produced from thousands of miles of shipping. This practice of buying cheap clothes from Southeast Asia…this business model is ethically and ecologically unsustainable.

Alternatively, consider that Boathouse sells a line of American-made Eco-Knit products such as sports tees, unisex hoodies, headbands and scarfs that are made from recycled plastic bottles and organic cotton. Yes, the price point is higher however the workers are paid a fair wage, have health benefits and have a safe work environment.
The United Nations codified eight Millennium Development Goals for 2015 to improve the health, environment and welfare for people around the globe. Unfortunately the MDG goal of CO2 emissions reduction stands out as a huge failure. This was exasperated from shipping cheap goods half way around the globe via noncompliant derelict ships and trucks. These continue to be a large source of unnecessary air pollution.

Boathouse Sports have their own manufacturing capabilities right here in Philadelphia. All Boathouse clothing is made in the U.S.

We communicate who we are through our clothing. Buying clothing locally we support the local US economy and reduce fossil fuel CO2 production. Vote with your wallet. Take ownership, be a locadon, buy Boathouse.
