With a rich history dating back to the turn of the twentieth century, J. Press has long been the embodiment of classic American style. Based in New Haven, Connecticut, from the very beginning, the brand quickly became synonymous with class and refinement through timeless designs, superior quality, and no shortage of twill.
By the 1920s and ‘30s, J. Press had the outfitter of choice for many working professionals, R.O.T.C programs, and university athletic teams across the eastern United States. You’ll find the brand referenced in the writings of the time from songwriter Cole Porter to novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.
It was this auspicious start that soon became a legacy, continuing through the rest of the twentieth century to today. From the hallowed halls of Ivy League universities to the bustling streets of New York, the J. Press brand has been the standard-bearer of a distinctively refined aesthetic that speaks to both heritage and class.
Boathouse: USA Olympian-Founded Athletic Essentials, Since 1976
A veritable newcomer to the world of apparel compared to J. Press, our team at Boathouse got our beginnings in 1976—when we debuted the iconic Stevenson jacket (with its technically designed shoulder gusset to allow full arm rotation) at the Montreal Olympic Games. Olympic rower John Strotbeck saw an opportunity to bring Stevenson jackets to athletes everywhere, founding our Philadelphia, PA, factory that same year.
Today, nearly 50 years later, we’ve expanded our American-made clothing offering to include an extensive range of athletic essentials—from uniforms for college athletes to performance outerwear for outdoor adventurers in all climates.
Though we’ve grown, there are some things we’ve never changed: our ownership of the entire manufacturing process and our unwavering commitment to hand-crafted American quality.
